    Additional Details on Digitizing Negatives

Do you remember the negatives that came with all your photographs? They were slim, occupied little space, and gave you peace of mind when you shared your printed pictures with loved ones because you ‘still had the negatives.’

But did you ever look at them again?

They likely ended up back in a drawer or shoebox, or perhaps they’re still in your sizeable fireproof safe.

While you’re protecting them, you’re not enjoying them. Crucial bits of family history are not easily accessible and certainly aren’t being shared. By now, you might find it challenging to hold your negatives up to the light to discern what’s on them.

Yet, you possess thousands of these negatives, some dating back 50 years or more.

This presents a multi-dimensional problem: your memories are there, but nobody can view them, and the images of these negatives fade as the years pass.

These negatives are valuable memories but hold no future value in their current state.

They must be brought into the modern era alongside your other media forms.

Although negatives are often the highest-quality analog items in a collection, they also tend to be the least viewed and most forgotten.

    Digitized Negatives

    Our Background in Scanning Negatives

We understand many people have them – those negatives stored in shoeboxes, tucked away in picture frames, or in large, heavy albums.

Many of these photos, passed down through generations from parents and grandparents, are now yellowing and fading.

They’re hidden in attics, closets, and under every bed in your house.

These negatives hold the vast majority of your cherished memories from days gone by.

And you likely have thousands of them. Over time, it becomes challenging to identify everyone in those negatives, even those you thought you’d never forget.

This realization was the catalyst for starting Memory Fortress.

At the time, there was no perfect way to digitize, organize, and tag your negatives.

We noticed that people usually took action during significant life events, such as family weddings or funerals.

We aimed to make transferring negatives and preserving memories incredibly easy and affordable. That’s why the photo scanning operation became our first launched business.

The process of digitizing negatives takes no more than five business days and is priced as low as 17 cents per photograph.

    Higher Quality Digitized Negatives

Most people who send in negatives are particularly concerned about obtaining high-quality images.

Of course, old negatives may have degraded somewhat over time while sitting on the closet’s top shelf.

Memory Fortress employs two forms of color correction to revive old memories captured in these transferred negatives.

Depending on the original film manufacturer, many negatives exhibit a red or blue tint.

While we can’t eliminate this tinting, we can significantly reduce it, leaving you with an image that is much crisper, more precise, and sharper than you might expect.

Our technicians are skilled in editing and diligently work on each image to extract the best possible quality from digitized negatives.

This raises an obvious question: If you have both the negatives and the printed photos, which should you send to Memory Fortress?

Good question – we’re glad you asked!

Generally, digitizing the negatives will result in a higher-quality image.

Since the printed photo is essentially a copy of the negative, scanning photographs means making a copy of an already existing copy.

However, processing the photographs is less expensive.

So, if cost is a significant concern, send in the photos. If image quality is paramount, send in the negatives, which hold the purest available image.

    What about Deliverables and Timing?

Processing digitized negatives takes longer than processing printed photos, but we usually convert most negatives to digital within 5-10 business days.

Substantial quantities may take a little extra time, and we will inform you accordingly.

Each negative is scanned individually and undergoes a meticulous process to maximize the image’s clarity and sharpness.

We do not rush this process to ensure the highest quality.
